SEO and GEO for small business websites
People now find businesses through AI assistants as well as search engines. The steps that help with both.
People now look for businesses through AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity as well as through search engines. Both rely on content they can find, read and trust, so most of the work overlaps.
Technical basics
Pages should load quickly and use clean HTML, with one main topic per page, a descriptive title and a meta description. A sitemap should list every page, and important text should be in the HTML itself. Content loaded later by scripts may be missed by crawlers.
Direct answers
If customers regularly ask about prices, timescales or the areas you cover, answer those questions near the top of the relevant page. A list of common questions with short answers works well for readers and for AI assistants.
Structured data
Schema.org markup describes your organisation, services, articles and FAQs in a format machines can read. It makes clear what each page is about.
Accuracy
Search engines and AI assistants tend to favour sources with specific, current information. Include dates, prices where you can, and clear company details, and update or remove pages that are out of date.
Measurement
Google Search Console shows how your site appears in Google. Visits from AI assistants are harder to track, so we agree measures with each client at the start and report against them monthly.
Our SEO and GEO service page sets out what a project includes.
